OK story is i have a hydro set up and had no issues for the first year at standard height or slightly lower then standard.

Recently as some of you have see i changed to a 1275 A+ with a rod changer instead of remote and the more solid unis instead of the rubber cross and u bolt type (unsure of names)

every since ive had this engine ive found whilst cornering the car feels like it is jumping onto the edge of its tyre cornering as if the tyre pressure was extremely low. i had some issues with my front suspension stretching down to the road when taking off (here comes the picture i love)

Image

From the advice of others i then let my suspension down and put competition bump stops in all round ( shockers to follow soon but shouldnt effect this issue) the car still leaned back and jumped on its tyre walls around corners so i lowered it to basically sitting riding on the bumpstops again temporary thing. But still doing this i then went for a wheel alignment finally once i had the time.

Now that i have done all this to FIX my car i have seemed to make it worse. The car is not only hoping onto its tyre walls around corners but also seems to lift at the front end whilst cornering and accelerating gently only dropping back down under heavy brakes or if i flick the steering wheel hard left and right. This also makes a loud clunk as the car drops back down. Even once the car has dropped back down the tyres still rest like they do in the picture above but i dont have adjustable suspension and the only part near that i have changed was a longer drive shaft for the different uni joint but being the same top and bottom arms the suspension set up should change????? Im going to start by greasing everything again so i hopefully free it all up but the entire front suspension was over hauled with the car in 2006 including all bearings.

Any guess is welcome this has really got me worried as its chewing my tires everytime i accelerate

Thanks to everyone in advance

Hi

For a hydro car, you should do the following: Pump the suspension up to standard pressure. This will stop the car rolling over as you turn. Hydro works properly at the correct pressure, low pressure makes it a bit loose and wobbly around corners.

Comp bumpstops is good, however the biggest change i noticed was when i fitted front shocks (OIL FILLED) as they resist movement both ways, this will dampen the lift of the fron tof the car.

you don't usually need front comp bump stops.

also, take the plunge and get adjustable suspension.

cheers
Matt

im eventually going to convert to disks and full cone set up but was hoping it would be something more simple. the car was still doing the rolling feel cornering at normal hydro pressure before i let it down. I think i might convert to the rubber cones. I cant figure out what has made it change.

Before the wheel alignment however the car wasnt jumping up at the front but it was so badly out that its screeched every corner i took.

the alignment print out shows

Front toe in LF before -8.1 after -0.4 RF before -4.2 after -0.4
front camber deg LF before -0.7 RF Before -0.6
Front castor deg LF before 3 RF 3.2

we need a bit of toe out.... I'm not sure, but it looks like you've got toe in

I found a while ago that I had a bit of toe-in, and the front would lift itself up, basically because the wheels are pushing towards each other

they have morris 850 mini specs that say -0.75 = or - .5

i just let the suspension right down so i can get a re pump and took it for a small drive down to the shops and sitting on the comp bump stops its more unstable obvisouly but behaving like explained above as if the front had been raised except now it doesnt sink back down might need a nice even pump up

how well greased are your top suspension arms, and radius arms - if one end is siezed, then it might not let it settle :?:

I'm having a bit of an out of left field idea here.
I'm no expert but Minis have unequal length drive shafts. (LHS is shorter thean RHS)
IIRC there are different drive shafts for different inner unis and/or CVs.
You may have mixed up different types and this is causing a mechanical lock condition in the suspension as the drive shaft/s may be too long to allow the inner joint to slide in and out properly and since the drive shaft can't shorten any further its preventing the suspension from moving back down to the correct ride height.

Just a thought

Ron there are only 2 shaft lengths for non- potjoint boxes, one is L the other R.
850 and Deluxe rubber joint shafts are same lengths and inner spline as a Cooper S H/S shaft.

Pot joint shafts are different, again there are only 2 lengths. L&R..

I reckon it's toed in at front or suspension is too high. I find the comp front bumpstops are way too high unless you are going rallying, they made mine understeer bad.
I'd try stds at front and comp at rear.

Looking at the photo My guess would be that the suspension is to high, Are You using hydro helper spring on the rear? If so what colour band is on the springs

I'm Having a similar problem with a hydro set up. Wheel alignment is correct as i have just had rodd do it quickly for me. Thanks mate. But when you drive and on power, not hard but driving, the tyres squeel like a stuck pig. And thats not even going around corners.... straight lines.....
What was changed was the drums to discs and the tie rods to straight ones, which arn't bent. the only other possiblity is the wheels were swapped from narrow offset contessas to 5" GB's.
Any clues people? I don;t drive that mini much(less than 10mins in a day if it goes out at all) so i have left it on the backburner of things to fix. But the list is shortening and so i need to start thinking of what it might be. This thread pretty much has all the same issues, so here i am too, what is it people?

I was thinking more along the lines that a RHS shaft was installed on the LHS. (If thats possible? Have never tried it myself)

Edit: How do you get the quote to appear with the white background and no brackets etc?

it's not possible to mix them up... they are very different in length

you had the "disable BBCode" option checked in the message
