Post subject: | Inpection plate fitting |
G'Day all, Well the inevitable happened and due to an oil leak I have removed one inspection plate on the passenger side of the engine, fitted the new bolt gaskets (the small ones around the bolt head, not the pink rubber one for the inspection plate) and now, the bolt seems too short by 3-5mm to get the inspection plate back on. Is there a trick to putting the inspection plate back on because I have been trying for 3 days now without any success. ![]() Car: Clubbie Engine: standard 998 rebored to + 30thou |

Grind a bit of a point on the bolt, it helps align it... ![]() |

Thanks Doc, But I can't even get the bolt to touch the threads, its as if the bolt is not long enough. I am afraid if I grind a point there wont be enough threads on the bolt to hold the inspection plate on. Perhaps I am misunderstanding what you mean. |

How old is the motor? Early 998 had different covers, cork gaskets and a fibre washer to seal the bolt. Late Clubby ones had red silicone rubber seals and a recessed washer on the bolt with a square section seal ring. |

It's a Late clubby with the red silicone rubber seals and recessed washer on the bolt. |

my apologies gafmo (and to all other readers) - I meant grommet: and they are the same as the old ones. My technical knowledge under the bonnet consists of thingamibobs and whatchyamacallits. I purchased them from a mini place in another state as there were/are none in Townsville. |

You could try a slightly longer bolt (5/16" UNF) but be careful doing it up, if its too long it will bottom out and not seal the cover or the bolt. Or, you could go to Clark Rubber and get some nitrile rubber hose trimmed to length that slides over your existing bolt and fits in the recessed washer. Take the bolt and recessed washer with you. Had to do this recently as the gasket kit for the Clubby GT engine I have just rebuilt did not have those seals. BTW, engine returns to Townsville on Sunday. |

its just the grommet you have changed..not the bolt, Inspection plate or the gasket around the inspection plate nothing has changed other than the Grommet. It is a bugger in Situ..I can't give you the length...."Hmm may be I can" Tappet Chest • 2 x Bolts 5/16” UNF (1/2” Head, 1 1/4” long) • 2 x Washers 5/16 PLN (5/8” OD) http://www.ausmini.com/forums/viewtopic ... light=nuts |

It is just the grommet and the cup washer I have changed, I did not change anything else. I have completed the job now but it is a little on the dodgy side, I will probably have to do it again in a few months time, depending on the 'quality'. I taped the driver side inspection plate to the block and took the bolt out, quickly replaced the grommet and put it back on. The driver side took me about 45 min to complete. ![]() |
