Post subject: | Duplex timing chain - Question |
Friday night and everybody has got questions on Ausmini Hopefully we all get the answers too Fitted a Duplex chain to Ribena. All is fine. Timed etc etc etc. Then we notice an oil leak from the bottom of the timing chain cover. Because of the lack of space when you put the new sprockets on, it seems you have to leave off the dish shaped washer from the bottom sprocket or the chain cover just wont go on. Anyway, it seems I have damaged the cover when I had it on the bench or something - the bottom lip is a little bent and oil was pouring out when the engine was running. Oh well, got to pull it apart again tomorrow now ![]() Hooroo |

Oil slinger does fit, put outer lip towards chain. ![]() |

Rodney, Be sure to use correct oil slinger for duplex gears. It is very flat, unlike the dished type for the single row chain and gear setup. Dave |

Yes...the old 'dish' type certainly doesn't fit does it ![]() Never mind, all fixed now with the correct oil slinger. The car runs sweet as now. The timing must have been scattering around somewhat with the old single chain. I'll do a 'How To' with a picture of the two oil slingers during the week. Hooroo |

![]() Why? Why is a belt better? Personally I don't think so, would be very interested to know your reasoning! Dave |

Dave I have my 1360 running a belt (it was in my 1310S motor when bought 15 years ago), but my 1412 and 1293 both have standard duplex. The belt gives me no spark scatter like chains do, doesn't stretch like chains do either so the (electronic) dizzy timing stays spot on for years, ditto the valve timing. Graham Russell likes them, for race motors. Downsides.. 1. They need changing periodically BEFORE they strip teeth. I used to run Pirelli/Dayco belts and changed them at 40,000 miles. Still looked perfect on the tooth flanks, but belts don't last forever. These Italian made belts became NLA a few years ago and everybody then sold us Chinese ones. I found one slack on the pulleys, so wasn't game to fit it. I now run `Gates' 41052X19MM Kevlar belts from MiniMania, they are supposed to be good for 50,000 miles. But they cost US$100 each.... ![]() ![]() 2. You have to be very careful not to mark or bruise the pulleys, as this will destroy the belt teeth quick smart. 3. The kit is now bloody expensive. OK for a racer but IMO too dear for road use. Next best thing is a duplex with an A+ tensioner. ![]() |

I`m not a big fan of the belt drives either,,, i`ve seen lots of them strip teeth over the years & i can assure you all that the results of same is not a pretty sight. Some people don`t even know they have one fitted & it`s a bit like "out of sight, out of mind" so the belts don`t get replaced periodically like they`re supposed to be & BANG goes an engine the same goes for an oil leak down that area, (& there is now 2 oil seals to deal with/cause problems) the belt gets all soft squishy & sh!tty & gives up &....yep, you guessed it--> BANG goes an engine The whole assembly is basically the same rotating weight as a duplex drive chain assy so provided you have a nice tight duplex system fitted then it`s all going to last for years & years & years with no confidence problems & no continuing costs like it would have if i had a belt drive in there even most of the major engine manufactuers are turning back to chain drives with all their new designed engines, simply because they "CAN" be such a pain & so dam costly over long periods of time in road use Not to mention all the race engines that i`ve seen shred the belt & BANG goes a full house race donk sorry but i`m not fitting one to my mini |
