Does anyone know what might have caused this to happen ?
I have just rebuilt the carbs and was trying to get it to run, had to turn it over for a fair while

They are pretty weak there. Either fit a new pinion assembly or another starter

Be careful getting the circlip off. It's tricky but can be done using a vice, vicegrips and a small blade screwdriver. Use safety glasses!

I'd fit an exchange recond starter. Or a Holden Gemini one is better.

To answer your question, did the engine back fire when you were starting it. If you did the starter was to slow to return back. As damage looks like impact damage from the flywheel.

Also check if the shaft is bent

I broke a few of these when I needed to run 20deg static timing in this bathtub headed motor with a Pulsar dizzy. It fired on the first compression stroke and BANG! another pinion broken. No problem since I've fitted the stealth black box.

Unsure if the engine did back fire, as I said had to turn it over for a while before it sort do fired

This got me motivated and I pulled out some old starter motors, is there a trick to getting the gear and spring assembly off or do you need a special tool to compress it?

You need a safe way to compress it.
I use the tailstock on my lathe, with a bit of tube that has a slot cut in it. you could also use this in a bench drill.
Or a press would be nice...

Is there a collet that needs to be removed once compressed?

Early Lucas starters to ~1960 had 2 locknuts instead. Better idea...!
