Post subject:  window winders..

hey all

as some know i have a 65 roundy with wind up windows, and as of around october last year i have managed to break 3 window winders in my car.
i broke 1, swapped it with the passenger side, broke that one, then found a spare in my box of goodies...then proceeded to break that one later on as well..

my question is there any more sturdy construction window winders?, or am i just winding my windows up WAY too vigorously!!

ive seen the rover kits made of aluminium or something, can these be fitted to older setups? (arn't the doors too different??)

has anyone else had this problem?

cheers

You need to lubricate the runners and window regulator. A bit of silicone spray or a rub of dry lube down the window channels and some fresh grease on the regulator will do the trick.
Also check that the existing grease on the regulator has not dried out and turned to glue.

Pommie handles will not fit.

Go to the next big car swap meet. I bought a set of chrome winders and interior door handles. Not entirely sure what car they are from but they fitted and were cheap. I've seen 60s Cortina door handles on Minis so presumably they window winders would fit also.

IMO finding a chrome period winder will look nicer than the Rover aluminium style.

I'm with Morris 1100, the actaul lifting mechanisms need some lubrication. Also see if you can get some early winders, at least they were all metal instead of plastic.

yeah it shouldnt be that hard to turn that you need enough force to break the winders, so a lube job or recon might be in order?

i have some alloy ones, i have no idea where they came from, they look slightly handmade but i'm keeping them as i really dont like the idea of 40 year old plastic handles. :)
