i was a little suprised to see John Cooper refering to the mini as a baby austin.. this name was originaly applied to the austin 7 ( i remember my dad having one of these as a daily driver). for those who dont remember the baby austin it was what you would call a vintage ca,r wheels as skinny as a bmx bike LOL....seems like they had a car b4 they had a name

I had heard the same thing, that the early minis were called austin sevens written se7en or something like that although my Mum used to have an austin seven and she was quite sure it wasn't a mini, so I decided to be confused and say nothing :P :D

Nah, It's just I try to limit a little the number of times I make a fool of myself and I had seen it on the internet and sometimes the internet is not the most reliable of sources (current company excluded of course :P)

IMO you can't find out if you don't ask. or you do eventually find out but later if at all.

The original Austin 7 was the prewar small car, one of the ideas behind the mini was as a spiritual successor to the 7, and when it was first release in 59 there was a morris and a austin version, the morris was called the mini, and the Austin was called the Seven, after a couple of years they changed the name of the Austin to mini as thats what everyone was refering to it as.

The only real difference was badgework and I believe the grill, I'm sure Steve can clarrify this, as he and Mikey have one of each between them. not sure if the austin is early enough to be badged as a seven or not though.

The Austin A30 was also an Austin 7

The 7 refers to the power under the RAC horsepower system. The UK used the bore size of an engine for the amount of tax paid by each car.

Hence why english cars are so small. You didn't have that kind of tax on american cars!

actually built under license by BMW, I've got a pic of the one at the british motor heritage museum....

the bore size tax is the reason why our motors are all under-square, bigger the bore the higher the tax, so they made long stroke motors, good torque, bad revs....
