Post subject:  Throttle spring on non matched twin carbs

I'm taking the twins off the sports850 in the next week or so and trying to find a better way of mounting the throttle return springs (and fitting a third one as scrutineers like I believe ???) . Currently they are on a home made plate under each carb and the rear carb's (clutch end of motor) spring is touching the extractors . The carbs are the originals (basic 1 1/4 su but there's two of them joined with shafts and W clips) and when I bought it 17 years ago ( ) the springs were wired to the exhaust manifold with rusty tie wire so my bracket was an improvement on that .

I'm wondering who else has this type of setup on a mini engine and how your return springs are attached . I had thought of using a matched twins heat shield assembly but the rear carbs spring point is on the wrong side for the normal mount .

Could you use the same kind of idea you're using but mount it off the air cleaner side... that would keep it away from the exhaust.

Just thinking in my head, might not work in real life.

POssibly but there isn't much there to mount it to , a W clip mounts directly to the throttle shaft where it comes out of the carb body so would have to be mounted directly to the W (not much leverage compared to the original spring mount ) .

Some photo's might help ,

The current throttle spring over the extractors .

And the W clips and shaft joining the two carbs ,

I'm thinking of bending the cable mount forward and then taking the return spring back to the firewall but looking for other ideas still .

Can you have an arm that connects to the throttle joining shaft? Same as a Cooper S twins setup?

You can't do that with these carbs, that float bowl is in the way.
I had a set on my 850 too, way back when...

I've had a dig through my parts bin and have a similar manifold , another set of the same carbs and cooper heat shields so will have a play tomorrow and see ifI can work anything with them (surely the heat shields will be usable as an anchor point ?) while they're on the bench before pulling the others off ..

scrutineers want double springs on single carbs.

i picked up at my local sprint autoparts a sprng with another spring inside of it, really cool seetup.

Well now I have a plan , I tried the heat shields on with the carb and the throttle arm on the carb on the right in the photo hits the shield with it in it's normal position ,

So I flipped the right hand side of the shield over (experimental mode) and it all fits nicely , the shield itself is about 1/2" too wide too and touches the THIRD SPRING point on the shaft joining these carbs (this shaft will go on mine) but it all theoretically gives enough points to mount the 3 springs without any drama's .

Now to get some steel and make up something similar (not going to modify this one , might need it one day) with an extra leg out the right hand side to fit the spring on the right hand carb .

Extra question though , how useful are the heat shields , should I make the plate with them on or just cut them to fit the carb flanges ? I'll make it in a similar 3 piece design but not sure whether to make the carb pieces wide enough to work as heat shields as well or not ???
