Might remember before Christmas I was haveing problems getting the right idler gear clearance. Only had 0.001" clearance with the thinest shims. So I had one shim ground down by 0.003" expecting 0.004" clearance. Well there is now ZERO clearance - gear spins by hand OK so it's not binding (before it felt stiff). The idler gear has one long and one short shaft. I have a Cooper box with an idler gear in it but it is short/short shaft. Anyway I tried that in place and I have 0.022" clearance
Don't know if it's the short shaft rocking in the bearing or there is really that much but I put the original back and there is no clearance again even when the nuts are hand tight without even taking them to 18lbs so I'm stumped - What's the problem - crooked idler shaft?
