I've got the chrome side strips on my Austin (thanks to Tspeed Jem and my wife's hair dryer) but am not 100% sure on how to make it stay there.

Do you just drill through the bottom side of the strip and the metal flange and rivet it? Or are there better ways.

You'll get lots of advice and experiences on here about this - mostly you need patience, a good vocabulary and a sense of humour
A couple of carefully drilled rivets as you suggest at the start of the major bends, and then they just push on. Best to lay it out in the sun first to soften it and get rid of the coiling, or use a heatgun/hairdryer on LOW.
Some seem to manage without rivets at all, but stuffed if I know how they do it.

I have been wondering about that to...some of us used to slap on some contact adhesive to hold the strip in the olden days when there wasn't many goop choices....but,

Would a thin smear of sikaflex (each side of the lip) make a good bond

Regardless of how you try to hold them the plastic will shrink in the sun and then pull away from the body at the bends. Cooper ones are worse for this than the plain ones.
BMC should have stayed with the 997's 6 piece S/S strips for Coopers.

They will take a more permanent shape after a long while of staying put. If you don't use the car much and can somehow use spring clips to hold them in position. Then after a few weeks (!!) they will get a better material memory for where you want them to sit.

Getting the strip to fit is the big job. Now the easy part is to pop rivet from under neath without drilling right thru into the top, I usually use a short 1/8" pop rivet drill bit, and then short pop rivets to hold the strip on. pop rivet at each end of the strip. one in the middle of the car just under the door and one at the rear of the front wheel arch and one at the front of the rear wheel arch. Another alternative is clear silicone if the strip is on and a good fit.

he is right thats how i do it ..... just when u drill through make sure it s only the bottom clear plastic section of the trip ,,, otherwise u will scrach the chrome top section , and be able to see it from above. GL with it all.
