i was wanting to look into supercharging my mini in years to come, but one of my friends seems to think it is illegal to mount a supercharger on cars in SA, unless it came on the car when it was purchased

whats the story with supercharging minis these days in SA?

Unfortunately your mate is right. It's illegal in most states.
If you to get an engineers approval it might be possible though.
Isnt the red, white and black one fas enough?

I thought you were another Lach in rAdelaide..

I can't remember the conditions in other states. I read about it in an auto trade magazine at work a while ago.

I want to build a centrifuge blower from an old truck turbo, only problem is i need one that turns anti-clockwise.
It's only illegal if you get caught.

I had this discussion with Rickman Smith [head engineer at transport SA] 2 weeks ago. If the car is pre ADR then aslong as the car passes a roadworthy inspection and any mods are checked by a certified engineer , you can fit what you like.
There are plenty of old cars set-up as a "hot rod" with BIG V8 's and blowers driving on the road

why not paint it mat black and cover it with Old stlye firewall covering so it looks standard. and then just wait to get pulled over see if you pass the checks as long as you drive responsible u dont get pulled over. i like the option of being able to turn off the SC12 setups so i can drive very normal or give it a little and turn it on.

You can supercharge or turbocharge a car built pre-71 here in SA without approval.

Up to '74 requires basic emmission laws to be passed, but it's only idle mixture or something so that's easy. But post '74 it's gets complicated, you have to prove that it passes and you probably won't be able to do that. Engineers certicate won't help, it's not about safety, it's about emmissions. However an engineer might be able to help you set it all up as there is a lot of math and science involved in these sort of things that a car tuner might not be able to do.

Oh and by the way, the SC12 does have an electric clutch so yes you can turn it off but the cars don't run well with it off. Won't rev, and feels 'choked'. May aswell leave it on and not floor it. But if you like the whole Mad-max thing then go for it.
