Just an observation (probably not so obvious to those with their minis tucked away in their garages) that there are quite a few round-nose minis for sale which are Cooper or S replicas (and advertised as such or not represented as real ones, which is great).

Are we seeing some effect from the dip in the economy I wonder?

I'm airing this as I enjoy reading the forums, and interested in everyone's observations.

I am not really talking about original Coopers and Ss as they are in a different situation regarding availability and values.

i think it is more than just a "dip" , it is more like a recession already in the mini/moke market.
for the first time ever i have had to relist a moke on ebay.
from past experience i priced the car a grand less than the minimum price i expected and did not get one bid.
it is listed again at $4200 and in the first 3 days not one question nor one bid.
this same car 6-12 months ago would have sold for around 6-7 grand.
ebay is a brilliant market barometer purely because of the volume of traffic.
might be time to start storng for a few years.

Ours is for sale as I'm building the wife a van instead.
Owning a Cooper S or replica is nice but you have to watch where you park it, real S or not.

I used to keep the S locked away and drive the van everywhere instead. I had one S nicked a few years ago and was reluctant to risk it again.

Trouble is, now I'm not too confident the van won't be a target either. I guess that's the price you pay for owning classics. And vans are becoming a rare sight these days and certainly stand out from the crowd.

Maybe a great mechanical big engined Mini with a tatty body with different colour panels/ undercoat is the answer.

Hmmph , there's a rat rod EK ute getting around Coffs at the moment on P plates , flat black , mags and the cleanest glass I've ever seen on a car ... Till I got close enough to it to see it hasn't got a single piece of glass in it , no windscreen , rear window , 1/4 vents or windows , no interior either , bare metal all the way and torn seats . No idea if it's registered or not as there's nowhere to put the rego sticker

Just get a generic everyday car that doesn't matter if it gets swiped and keep the toys for fun days , too many people are looking for any model mini now .

Although there have been big lay-offs in the mining industry, these are the peak end of the skilled mining market. $120k+ jobs for resources china isn't buying. I don't believe anyone has really lost their jobs yet, we are still spending...

But I think a lot of people are nervous, and may cut away everything which holds them down.

i've noticed the same in WA as we have several new members who have bought existing club minis. thankfully they are all going to people who want them and they are going to good homes.

Well, for me and most of us, that the cars are going to people who want them and who will preserve them is the best thing, and also helps keep the minis going strong with new club members adding their fresh enthusiasm!

I too have noticed the market getting flooded. Many Mini's are for sale. But I also know of a bunch of younger people eager to find the Mini of their dreams.

I guess it's just the circle of things, the older people selling their toys to young people who will (hopefully!!!!!) keep the marque alive.

I aint selling my toys, no way. I'm still developing them, for 40 years now. Sometimes they go into hibernation for a while but I always cherish them and am currently teaching my 12 yo son "the knowledge".

But I do worry about security and the fact that he may never be able to enjoy the cars everyday like I did without being very careful where he parks, where he takes it, how he drives it.

I think a lot of the "fun" in driving Minis on the road has been wound back. No more Rhoades style impersonations, no more humbling 351s in the wet, no more chucking it through the hills. It's just too risky in our law laden land these days, not to say much more traffic, and of course road ragers may want to kick your head in.

And here in the nanny state, SA, you can get your pride and joy impounded, even confiscated if you step out of line. The public are being encouraged to dob in noisy cars and examples of anti-social driving. Mobile phones make that all too easy. Still seem to be plenty of burn outs going on though - new symbol of Aussie anti-authoritarianism?
