 Post subject: Fuel gauge

Hey guys
Was just wondering is there a way of testing if the fuel sender is stuffed? i have a 3 gauge cluster on my clubbie but the fuel gauge is the only one that doesn't work and i have run out of fuel a couple of times because i lose track of my km's lol.

With the ignition on, disconnect the wire from the sender, then watch the guage as you earth the wire. if the guage goes up the guage works - how accurate is another thing. Dont do this for long as the guage can be damaged.

To test the sender, remove it, put a multimeter (analogue is best) across the terminal and the body of the sender then slowly move the arm, the resistance should change smoothly, any twitches or skips and its not good.

To check the sender disconnect the leads from the sender and put an ohmmeter across the terminals. It should read something like 80 ohms, it's different for each type of sender and is dependent on how full the tank is...

The wire that connects the coil to the terminal in the sender is just an extension of the coil wire (VERY thin). I repaired the sender in my van by stripping the insulation off some copper wire and soldering one end to the coil and the other to the terminal (inside the sender itself). Do so at your own risk, or buy a new sender!

Just a basic variable resestor. Just be sure to replace the seal when you open it up, if the old one doesnt look very decent.
