I am about to put a new set of duplex timing sprockets and chain in my mini. I have pulled it apart and lined the two timing dots up so that it is at TDC. When like this were should the dissy be pointing to (mine is pointing to number 4) I thought it should be pointing to number 1. Also what should the valves be doing, rocking on 4 (like mine) or on 1. These may be dumb questions but it does not seem right. Cheers Pete |

Your dissy drive is 180 degrees out, pull it out & turn it around, it should sit a one o'clock when in properly. Doogie |

Just make sure the bolt you use to pull it out is in the drive properly before you pull it out , pain in the proverbial to split the motor and gearbox if it falls in ... (I know you'd already know that Pete , just reminding anyone else who's reading and thinking the of doing the same thing) |

I just prefer to leave the dizzy drive alone and swap the plug leads around. |

I've done that too. I found the engine builder put it in 180 out, so I swapped the plug leads, turned the key and all was good. |

Doogie, With sprocket timing dots in line the dizzy should point to #4. Valves are rocking on #1. This catches many people out, the last one was Aaron... ![]() Ask him if you don't believe me. You need to rotate the crank 1 turn before putting dizzy shaft in with the slot as shown in the manual. WTF BMC did it this way, I have no idea... ![]() |
