black smoke is fuel - so you either are too rich or you have blocked air filter/inlet

To check the air filter just take it out and see if the car runs better.

Did the problem happen suddenly? If it did then i would suspect a stuck needle valve in the carby float bowl, that would pour in fuel as fast as the pump works.

The choke could be stuck on

the piston in the carby could be dirty & stuck

stuck "Needle & seat" (float valve)

the air filter could be blocked but i highly doubt that because that sort of thing happens very progressivley & not usually all of a sudden

ok. so i have had a look at my carby and have identified the problem the problem is the piston is stuck the one where you put your hand down the throat of the carby and lift up the piston thingy. you cant lift it up. hope that makes sense. what do i do to fix this problem? brand new needle so thats not bent

You would want to hope you can lift the piston up, thats part of the design. And the float is in the fuel bowl.

the piston is too hard to lift up......what do i do to rectify this problem? my workshot manual trouble shooting does not say anything about it....

So i guess that means you have oil in the dash pot then.

1st- Disclaimer, I am NO expert on SU Carbies! However after recent experiences have been able to pull them apart in my sleep

If you have NO movement in the piston (as you say), unscrew the damper from the top of the dashpot bell (Usually black plastic shaped thingo). Unscrew the three screws that are around the outside of the bell. Lift the bell gently upwards which should separate from the piston however in your case as it is stuck, the piston may come off within the bell. It may be since you have recently replaced the needle that the needle is not seated properly and this is causing your piston to stick. If you can separate the bell and piston clean and remove any crud between the two.

Be gentle with the piston and bell as the relationship between the two is very important. My understanding is they cannot be mixed with other SU carbies as one part "matches" to the other and as time goes on they wear together.

You may need to look fir another carb or buy a SU book to solve your problem. Hope this helps,

Scott
