| Post subject: | Wiper motor thrust screw adjustment |
Folks, Does anyone know what the correct adjustment is for the thrust screw on the round body wiper motors? I'm inclined to screw it up tight, pushing the armature all the way home, then backing off an 1/8th of a turn, but I'm not certain that this is correct. The workshop manual I've got mentions this adjustment, but I think the authors didn't know the answer either, so wrote the section in very non-desciptive terms (ie useless!) It'd be good to hear from someone who knows. Thanks. Matt |

Adjust mine by feel, bring it up until it cannot go anymore and then back off to allow movement enough to turn freely, but no backlash. |

Make sure there is a nylon tip on the top of the screw thread before adjusting |

what does this adjustment do? is there any way to adjust how far the arms move? I'm pretty sure my wiper motor is the original, but it has a bit much travel - the drivers side wiper hits the scuttle in one direction, and I can see it out the 1/4 vent window in the other direction.... |

This is like a bearing, when you turn your wiper motor on the comutator moves upward and this prevents to much travel, the sweep of your wiper, Given that you have the correct wiper wheel boxes fitted, is governed by where the pick up point is on the drive wheel, That is the big nylon gear, this has a metal plate fitted to it, stamped on that plate will be 120Th this is the amount of teeth on the nylon wheel and possibly 105 degree this is the sweep angle, as these wiper motors look similar to some morris 1100, morris 1500 or marina it is possible that the wrong drive wheel is fitted |

AFAIK the adjustment screw simply provides a limit of travel for the armature shaft. Without it, the armature would work its way up towards the top of the motor, and break off the brushes in short order. As the adjuster is stationary, a nylon wear pad is fitted to the end of the screw. It's an adjustment that is made at manufacture and at rebuild - I doubt you'd need to attend to it in service. I can't see that it plays any role in setting wiper travel. I wonder if you've got the wrong wiper gear fitted to the motor? - I've got some that say 105degrees, and others say 110 degrees. Not sure of the correct applications - perhaps one is for LH park, the other for RH park? You can check by popping off the cover plate (four screws, one with the earth wire). Should be quite easy. It would be because the worm gear on the end of the motor shaft will try to climb up the large gear when it is under load. It needs some sort of thrust bearing, not sure why it needed to be serviceable , a copper washer surely would have sufficed I think... |

Just as a matter of interest, All Australian Round body MINI wiper motors park to the left of the car, Single Speed and Two speed. The park direction is marked on the cover Plate with the word Park and a arrow pointing to the Left of the car, or to your right if you are looking at the wiper motor whilst standing at the front of the car |

John, when did they stop putting dates on the 2 speeds? I have 2 Clubby ones here with no dates... |

about the same time they made the bloke who did the stamping redundant as part of a cost cutting measure? |

Kev, A lot of the wiper motors that are not dated were sold as replacement parts, However, I have seen a lot of 1977 1978 Minis without date stamps, The date stamp was put there by lucas |
