Post subject:  fuel problems???????
hey guys having some problems with my clubbie. standard 998 with just a lumpy cam and exhaust system no mods.
went for a cruise to coogee on friday night and when i went to leave coogee it wouldn't start! lately on start up, car blows out a little smoke and for about the first 5 minutes of driving splutters badly and then clears after that??

Friday night i turned the key, starter turned and car attempted to start and just cuoghed a little and then nothing.... after about 3 or 4 minutes of continually trying to start choke all the way out the car JUST turned over had to pump the accelerator like mad just to keep the motor from dying.... SMOKE POURING OUT THE BACK as i got the revs up took of up the street with smoke bellowing :-(

rest of the drive home if i pulled up at a set of lights it would sputter on take off............. something is not right i'm not a mechanicly minded person but this is strange.... any ideas would be helpfull.

lol chop chop had the same problem in alice about a yr ago when we went to the drive ins. he's plugs got fouled up something back and i think all we did to stop the problem was tap the top of the float bowl of the carbie and cleaned his plugs out. sounds like the engines flooding.

i have the same feeling... too much fuel! i thinks its time to drop it over to greig at Mini classic for a looks... could possibly be the fuel needle.... is there a possibility the choke may be fouling?

well it could be the choke is stuck on like pearl has been like that lately. but urs seems really bad, i would probably tap the top of the float bowl and clean the sparks plugs first to identify the problem.

stupid question HOW do you clean the spark plugs?

take them out, if u have some carby cleaner it helps and some sand paper really. just a little though dont scrub to much.

Clean your spark plugs with some wet and dry (without the wet :wink:). You don't want anything too coarse.

While you're at it, you might as well do the other end too, ie contacts and rotor button inside the dizzy.

I heat em up with the oxy until the insulator just goes red.
Voila, all the crud in there just vapourises away. 8)
Trust me they then work good as new.

Never wire brush them, you are putting metal particles on the insulator- adds to your problems.
