I was at a local tyre place yesterday getting a couple of tyres fitted and asked how much some 12" rims would be. He wandered off and came back with a set of 12" rims with "GB" center caps and said he wanted $600 but because a couple have some gutter rash, I could have them for $550.

Are these Rover mini rims? They seem quite light but was wondering whether $550 is too much for them? Are they really light as they seem? Say, compared to Superlights?

Oh - and will they fit on my '78 Clubman sedan?

$600 for rims only? 12" rover cooper rims can be had for half that!
The GB is a badge, nothing special I suspect (though pictures would confirm if you can find some.

If they're square or triangle shaped, no they wont.
Round wheels will usually fit. If they're originally off a mini you'll be right.
If not, check the offset and stud pattern.

You can get brand new rims for less than $600. There are quite a few brands to chose from. Check out www.minisport.com.au or www.minisplus.com.au . I wouldn't pay anymore than $300 for second hand rims unless they are perfect or something special.

They may fit on your 78 clubman, but be careful. If they are the rover ones, they may not as they require the stepped drum rear brakes. The fronts will be fine.

I have spaced rear drums, but given the comments so far and a single phone call I made to Bob Janes today, I can get new ones for around the same price so unless the guy can drop the price a fair bit, I'll be going for some other ones (Rover or not)
