Dog collar again, but just one and mounted centrally on the bonnet catch bracket under the bonnet and the other half uses one of the bolts on the catching mechanism. No drilling of holes needed.

Sorry for the slight hijack but surely mounting to the same bolts as the catch kinda defeats the purpose. The whole point of the secondary strap is to secure the bonnet in case the catch fails. Failure of the catch could include one of the mounting bolts in which case your no better off. Although given your on the track in that pic, the scrutineers obviously see differently.
Just my two cents anyways

By the way ....... Has anybody else noticed how well placed these hook catches are for ripping strips off your scalp when working under the bonnet?

Hi Guys and Gals, I have a set of bonnet straps that I want to put on my car, but not sure where I want to put them yet. Either on an angle down under the headlights, or straight down and behind the grill. Cheers, Ryan

Ok, so after playing with the search function for a little while (not easy to use), I found some pics. Not sure what combination I like best. The single one looks good, but so do the angled ones. The two that go straight down I like because they are neat. Hmmmmm

When I had them on mine (before paint job) I had them straight up and down, just pop rivetted onto the moustache.

They are not the leather strap type but this is my budget option. They are reflective dog collars, $2 each from a discount store. I didn't want to put holes in the exterior so these are attached to the inside brace of the bonnet and looped around the bumper hockey sticks. Just another idea to throw into the mix.

You already found my car whilst searching, but here's a better up close photo. I wanted to do something different while keeping with the 60s rally Mini style. Originally I was going to do diagonal straps but felt it clutters the headlight area too much so decided on straps that followed the bonnet stripes. I looked at the kits avaliable and wasn't particular impressed. The tan leather kit is nice but expensive and the black leather kit looks a bit cheap IMO. So for next to nothing my Dad and I made our own. Leather and copper rivets were left over from some other work (nothing to do with the Mini), the buckles were a few dollars, the chrome dome nuts were a dollars and the aluminium pieces were scrap. I think in total it costed around $10.

Just my two cents anyways Thankyou for your concerns, but it would be a very rare thing for a bonnet catch bolt to fail. In my experience, most instances of bonnets opening unexpectedly are because they haven't been closed properly or the latch hadn't been adjusted correctly. But to keep your mind at ease, this car still has the spring-loaded hook catch as a back-up as well. By the way ....... Has anybody else noticed how well placed these hook catches are for ripping strips off your scalp when working under the bonnet?
