Post subject:  Diff bearings

can i change the diff bearings and side cover bushes with the engine in the car??
or can the diff only be removed with the engine out?

i noticed there if a fair bit of slop in the bearings causing oil to leak out the side cover seal

Regards,
Matt

That slop is not the diff ball bearings, it is the bronze bushes in the side covers.
Yes you can fix this in the car, you need to drain oilz, remove covers, press new bushes into the covers, then get their bores machined to fit your pot joints/output yokes.

I wondered about that rh pot joint. the left was ok but the right hmmmm
As doc said if you need new one ,get one and bring it up and I will fit and machine it for you. bring the pot joint as well.
At least it runs better than the 1275

Do you think the boring could be done on a lathe? Or would a mill be best?

definately on a lathe. a mill is not designed for that type of job.
when matt put the pot joint in he may have dislodged the seal spring

hmm thats a point and chance that spring could make its way past the bush and do some damage?

I doubt there is room for the spring to get past the bush.
Clearance is only .001" approx when new.

Your right there doc. the gearbox is A plus , and matt changed the pot joints over. the original rh one was loose when I checked it.

The other joints are worn as well so it probably needs new bushes. Matt put it in and I just wondered if he dislodged the seal spring. Unfortuneatley I did not get chance to check it over after they were fitted as I had to go out.
He has put this second hand 998 eng /box into his car until he rebuilds his 1275. It was a rush job.
