Some were used as a mechanical taco cable drive gear,,, others were used for dry sump drive on Nth/sth engines

When this cam was designed it was for Formula Junior in the first half of the 60s. The extra gear could have been for dry sump as injection was not allowed under Junior regs and was probably a long way off in small single seat cars.
When BMC did run the injection Mini in 1968 did they run a Lucas pump on the back of the engine? How did they get the big Lucas pump to fit back there?

I have a 648 cam in the shed somewhere, I knocked back another 648 cam with roller bearings and the Cooper S block that went with it.

full roller cams, (bearings & lifters) have been done by a few people in the past,,, i`m pretty sur the cost, time stuffing around & any slight gain from it all didn`t weigh up enough to warrant mass production

The fuel injection pumps i`ve seen hanging off the fuel pump hole were in nth/sth configuration,,, never seen one set up off the back in a mini tho,,, but same cam none the less

The lucas injection Minis had a cam with a long nose that stuck out through the timing cover and drove the metering unit on the front of the engine. I'm not sure how the pump was driven, I think they were electric.

There is a great thread on this subject on the Mk1 Performance Conversion forum, the pictures below comes from there.

Yes Simon, I've got a couple of em too! :D

I was always told that the extra gear was for injection pumps, but a s I typed it I thought Hmmmn?

Maybe as Matt said, inline only? I have seen the belt driven pumps too, and I should have known Mark Forsters site would clarify!

Cheers

Cool, that is what we needed to see. The metering unit (sometimes called a pump) was not driven by the extra gear on the cam, so that blows the fuel injection theory away!
Yes the pressure pump would have been electric/Lucas/very unreliable.
