Post subject:  Axle tramp in a mini based motorkhana special

Has any one got any experience or thoughts on reducing axle tramp on a mini based motorkhana special? I can think of quite a few things that may be causing it. It seems to be a common problem amongst FWD mini specials. It occurs when power is used when cornering. In a straight line it is OK.

Hello derf.
I saw that today and thought 'that vehicle would suck when tramping' (not as bad as the VW tho)
I'd be checking the bushes, then shox (it did have a live front end right?) then the structural integrity of the chassis. It looked a bit flexi.

Is it that the cones/shocks originally designed for a car over 600kg?

Just add more hp and that will give more wheel spin and reduce the "tramping"........... Stupid response but sounds good in theory !!!!!!..... Im interested to here real input rather than my crap !

Just to throw some total confusion into the mix ... I was getting a similar problem today at the Motokhana ... As i did a handbrake turn the wheels Inside then outside bounced around the all hell... And this is in a standard weight Leyland .. i stiffened the shocks and that made it a little better ...
Also i was running a quaife diff.. and Yokie 032r's...
I was nearly thinking of putting the Bridgestones back on the front so it wouldn't grip as much ...
Bushes are good shocks are new ..
Front swaybar????? could this help
Rear swaybar ???

It has new shockers & bushes. I believe close to 0 caster & 0 toe-in. Yes, it is stiff being so light with standard donuts. This could be an issue. It has a lot of grip & more than enough power to spin the grip. Softer suspension may help? Less droop may help? The drooping wheel tramps. Other forums about road cars talk of fixing a similar problem with anti lift kits or a stiffer rear end. The cause may be something to do with ackerman? All 3 specials there today tramped to some degree. Something else to do with suspension geometry could be the issue. Too much outward offset on the wheels? Position of the rack maybe?

Yeah car wasn't bad apart from the weird handeling .. great o9n the track or the road ... just different on the Khana..
It needs a better handbrake
Also needs a bigger steering wheel... Then it will really be a good car for Khana's

And a good tune it's only running a weber with a swan neck manifold
All good fun tho

The two main causes for wheel tramp are
1 ackerman turn the inside wheel is not turning as much as outside. this is std steering geometry on mini. when the inside wheel is almost fully down it is trying to push straight ahead. the outside is trying to turn more. this is creating understeer and as the inside wheel "bounces" it then transmits this to the outside wheel via the rack.
2 The angle of the steering arms in relation to toe-in/out between both wheels. IE rack center height . When the inside wheel "bounces" this movement is transfered to the inside steering arm causing the wheel the dramatically change toe-in/out. this is then transfered to the outside wheel, and the toe-in/out fluctuates rapidly. You can feel it in the steering wheel

The biggest influence on mini front suspension behaviour is a thing called"polar moment of inerta" this the the mass of the eng and the car pivoting around it. The mass is in front of the drive line and the car starts to see saw from front to back

Put a set of wheel aglinement bars on the front wheels and then jack the car up on one side at look at what happens to the steering geometry.
