Post subject:  remaking 850 floor mats. questions...

just a few questions i would like to ask as i am considering reproducing the original rubber floor mat for the morris 850 as I have all the necessary equipment at my disposal.
my questions are...

1. do i need permission from anyone to reproduce and sell 850 mats. would i be breaking the law in some way?
2. would anyone be interested in purchasing some of these mats?
3. would anyone be interested in donating an old mat to the cause so that i can produce a mould? you will of course get it back unharmed.

any input into this would be greatly appreciated. marcello

I doubt it! you should have no worries as its not a trademark or copyrighted object.

No I wouldnt be interested in one, But I'm sure if you contact Mini King, and others I'm sure that they will buy them

haha i was just thinking the same thing while i was at work.
I was thinkning how you could mould rubber, why doesnt somebody do it ??.

If i had an 850 or a delux or a pverty pack clubman i would definitely be interested.. But sadly i dont

I wouldnt think you would need permission, as its a just a reproduction part. People dont need permission to make carpet sets for minis so why should rubber be any different....
oh wait there is a morris insignia in the centre of the mat isnt there...
Does BMW own that??

I will buy 2 sets! No copyrite problems, i have been thinking about doing it also but never seem to get around to it. Reproducing the correct door seal for early sliding window cars would also be a good idea as no one has done it yet.

The 850 floormats have a rough 'knobbly' texture, with a plain edge all around them. I reckon they were a big moulding, not just sheet cut from a roll! The tunnel / starter button bulge were probably moulded in to allow the mat to fit well.

Pretty sure they had a manufactures name moulded in one corner, on the flat edge.

Also, the floor mats witht he Morris Emblem were later, came out in 65 I think for the deluxe?

Marcello, I reckon the mats were 5 pieces, front, rear, 2 front wheel arches and under front parcelshelf / firewall.

Are you proposing a 5 piece set?

Graham, all the the mats in Nana's are in remarkably good nick and for the life of me I can't see any manufacturers name anywhere.

There are 4 pieces. One on each wheel arch, the front single piece (no added mouldings at all. What they did was stick a light canvass around the various openings on the underside for strengthening. The rear piece has the slides for the rear of the seats.

I'd purchase one. Would like a new boot one too. Keep us informed.

Morris 1100 owners would love someone to make floor mats and boot mats.

the door seals that minisport/minispares/somerford mini spares/scotts old auto rubbers etc sell are not the same as the original. The original seal was made of a foam type rubber, similar to the original side window seals. most aftermarket type seals that are sold as "850" door seals dont allow the door the close properly.

hey all. good to hear so many people are keen. i am aware that there is more than one piece. i thought i would tackle the hardest part first, the front main mat. the rest should be easy if i can get this front part right. if anyone has any good pictures of these mats that would also help as i believe the 850 can out with 2 slightly different versions. will keep you all posted on how it goes but it may be a while before some decent results. thanks to all...

I'd buy some BMC mudflaps if you can make these as well, they go for big $$ in the UK on ebay too.

Marcello, I don't need 850 mats strangely enough, but I will take some pics of our 850 mats and send them to you if thats any help. But i would be interested if you decide to get creative and make the same for delux etc.. i have a mini-matic that the mats were stuffed in (had the embossed morris bull emblem on them) and were accidently thrown out, but would like to buy a new set as my previous plan hasn't worked to get new ones.
