Post subject:  Clearance between Piston and Bore

Hey,
I have just recieved my pistons for my 998cc engine and i took the block and pistons down to someone that bores and hones engine blocks, and the guy there told me that i need to find out the clearance from the bore to the piston, so can any of you guys help me with this.
He also told me that you should get a measurement from around 5mm from the bottom of the piston.
Just to let you guys know, my pistons that i have are 998 Flat tops and there 80thou they are not GR ones.

That clearance should be printed on the box the pistons came in.

Ummm?? From memory mine were about 3.5 thou. Normally you take him the block and the pistons, you tell him what you intend to do with the engine and he measures the pistons and bores the holes to an "appropriate" size.

If you don't know the answer this is not a decision you should leave to popular choice.

Good luck, Ian

If the pistons you have are cast Hypatec type pistons then .0015" running clearance is what you are looking for in a road engine. As mentioned, this info should be on the box.
