Hi,

I just took my car through rego today and one of the things that they pinged me for was 'Steering rack too tight'.

Is this likely? Is it adjustable?

I am running a heap of caster which makes the steering very heavy. Is it possible that this would make the inspector think that the rack is tight. At least that is easily adjustable.



Another thing I failed on was for my wheels sticking out past the body. I use LS/SS mags (on a Cooper 's' front end) and they do stick out a little bit. I don't want to use flares.

Will standard steel wheels stay under the body on discs? How about 'S' clubman wheels?

Jack the front end up, then try the steering... it may be OK.

Cooper S, Clubby S, and SS/LS Contessas all stick out about the same.

Cooper S stickout at front was barely legal when new. Can't do much except fit flares like SA forced them to.

What tyres do you have- wide treads (like Falken) stick out further...

Probably not much point arguing about the fact the mk1 S wheels stuck out as standard when being made, as Doc said SA made the flairs happen but nSW was later i think

Ok, tight rack....
When you drive the car and you take a corner if you take your hands off the wheel does the car try to straighen up, or does it stay turning?

I'll have a bit of a look at things tomorrow.

I do have Falkens on the rims. So I guess that's not helping.

I think that the steering self-centres fairly well. It feels pretty tight in general but not too bad. Obviously it feels completely different than my Outback.

The steering wheel is quite small (13 inch?). I do have a lowering bracket which I fitted no too long ago so I'll try loosening and re-tightening the U-bolts and see if that makes any difference. I didn't know that trick.

I did notice however that after I installed my steering wheel lowering bracket, my steering tightened up a little..

I even checked under that car with the steering rack U bolts loose that the rack moved as the column lowered. no issues there.
