Post subject: | Twin SU Choke Adjustment |
When I start the mini cold, I'd like to raise the engine's idle speed a little until it warms up enough to idle alone. At the moment this takes a couple of minutes either because it's a little tight, or because of the RE13 and 1.5:1 MS forged rockers make it a little too lumpy. It 's a little lumpy, but idles steadily at 800, I know I probably should raise this a little with the aforementioned cam and rockers being fitted.... When I operate my choke on the twin SUs however, the engine seems to get swamped and stops too easily. I believe the jets open a little faster than the idle cams can open the butterflies. The adjustment screws on the choke linkages are all but touching the idle cam, but there's not enough movement here at small openings of the choke to raise the engines revs. Is there another adjustment I can perform to make the jets a little less sensitive when I first open the choke? Lower the float bowl levels perhaps? Needles are AH2, jets are standard and springs are red. Float bowl level is as per handbook height (1/8th was it?) |

Factory twin set-up or something else? Appears not, if your'e talking idle cams. In which case you may have to compromise with a higher than normal (warm) idle speed. An that can be annoying ![]() |

No, factory set up and linkages. The idle adjust cams are fitted onto the sides of the spring loaded choke fittings. they can be seen in this photo (sorry, I don't have a clearer picture). ![]() ![]() |

Hmmm! They look like collector's items! Only suggestion I have is to alter the profiles of the cams (weld bead?). That could be tricky and I guess you'd have to modify them as a pair (clamp together in a vice and file smooth). |

The first 1/4 of movement when you pull the choke is only supposed to raise the idle and after that the choke should start to move. Is your choke adjusted properly? Can you raise the idle without moving the chokes? |

Thanks, It shouldn't be that tricky I suspect, I've had the same set up before and I had the adjustment set up such that the idle went up a little before the choke came in (or so it seemed) |

Is your choke adjusted properly? Can you raise the idle without moving the chokes? The chokes seem to start to move within a small amount of cable movement. So I guess the answer is no. |

Didn't take long to find the problem with that little pearl of information... The choke assembly on each carburetor has two clock springs on each. One can be seen if you look closely in the second photo. I've omitted the second spring which sits against the body of the carb. It's absence can be seen in the 2nd photo as well ![]() I reckon I've found the springs in the parts organiser. Something to do this evening ![]() |

All fixed! I still had the springs in the spares organiser, so was able to put them in pretty easily. It was a double edged sword, I also had forgotten to put in the spire washers that are used between the cam and the nut. So was able to fix that up as well. All good, happy days. Cheers Morris. |

we need to talk needles Mick - AH2's aren't ideal - maybe I'll bring a handy little toy to Phillip Island and show you |
