Post subject:  aerial position & type?

Hi all
Finishing the body just before painting, & trying to decide what type of aerial to use & where to put it.
Have read previous threads.
Deciced against guard mount. Roof mount or window aerial?
Anyone got the rear screen aerial. What type & any good?
Anyone got the one that sticks on the front screen? What type & any good?
Or just stick with a roof mounted aerial?

Hi CD,

My aerial is a standard chrome collapsible type. I have it cable tied to the top of the shock tower in the front left inner guard (above the front wheel). It does the job and is out of sight. I tried a few of the interior "On glass" type and found them to be useless.

have you thought about a system with just an iPod? I can do without news and crap commercial music and would prefer to hear some stuff I like.

im tempted to do that in my mini.. currently no radio at all. but i miss my ABC 774 and JJJ..

also if you go the ipod path you need an amp as well.

Thanks all.
Guess I'll go for the roof mounted aerial.
Will have a look at Supercrap & another car audio place.

I have a roof mounted aerial on my car (positioned in the centre line of the car, about 50 - 100mm back from the front roof rail) and with it swept back I quite like the look.

The van has a guard mounted aerial, and it looks like crap..

mini king have the roof mounted aerials. and you dont need a amp to run a ipod. you just need a modulator that plugs in the back of your head unit where the cd stacker would plug in.

I have a roof mounted aerial and I really like it, it looks retro so it suits the mini well unlike the guard mounted aerials which seem like an after thought :? .
Would antenna cable looped around the inside of the roof work? that way it's completely out of sight and IMO the length/size of it should pick up a decent signal even through the roof.

I didn't like the idea of a visible aerial so i cut down an old one so that
there was just a little bit of cable out of the socket(about 4inch's) then
stripped the cable down to the wire and solded it to a normal black earth wire and taped it all up so that it couldn't earthout on anything and ran that wire (about 1.5 mtrs) up the back seat to the back windscreen
and sat it just inside the window rubber and it work great and best of all
you can't see it

The guard mounted aerial is more period than the roof one - Everybody had an aerial on the guard, Don't recall roof mounted aerials till much later.

Now if you were really cool in the 60's you had one with a spring at the bottom so it flexed 8)

I run a `70s rubber one on the guard, if it cracks/gets pinched I just go to Jaycar, buy another and screw it on. 8)
I do like the look of the roof one though, we might put one on the van...

Roof mounted aerials, while looking good can be a pain in the arse. Bought one new from a mini parts supplier interstate to replace one that broke and within a few months the chrome spring part started to rust. If you need to replace it, its out with the windscreen and drop the hood lining to get it out. A mate has a mobile phone aeriel on the rear window. Doesnt look period, but works
