All, I work for a Toyota dealer, and we had a Hiace come in with a really rattly engine. The hydraulic lifters weren't getting any pressure.

The cause of this? The diaphragm in the oil filter had disintegrated and let go of chunks of rubber into the oilways in the head, blocking the flow.

Result? One angry Hiace driver, one stuffed engine. and a 5-figure repair bill. This happened before Christmas and still isn't solved. The seller of these filters has agreed to cover costs, but it wold've been better if it didn't happen in the first place.

Now... The brand of filter I obviously can't say on a public forum. BUT. they are grey, and come in red boxes. Toyotas mostly run the same filter as the screw-on Mini ones.

This has happened enough times that there is a Toyota Technical Bulletin out about it all. So this one isn't the first by a long shot.

For your own good, please steer clear of these for a while or until this 'batch' has gone out to someone else!

PLEASE NOTE: not meaning to crap on too much, or to bag the company that produces these, but we'd all rather not have engine rebuilds!

They would be the same brand of filter that forgot to put the O-rings in the cartridge filters for the older Minis and 1100s.
The same company that used to make quality stuff in Australia but have shifted all production offshore to save money (and compete with cheap imports that have flooded the country since the reduction in tariffs)

So which filter would you pick next?
I'm supposing the blue ones, followed by the green ones, last option the black ones.
In the 12 years i've been mechanicing we have never had issues with the grey ones in the red box.

I've noticed the majority of filters are made by the GUD company, but in various locations around the world.

And they used to be GUD too. When made here, then UnZud...

Does anyone know if the grey cartridge filters that come in the red box are being supplied with all the seals now?
