OK this will sound stupid. Filled the car up at South West Rocks today, with Shell premium unleaded (thats all that was available). The car now reeks of a rotten egg gas smell. Four other Cooper 's' out of the seven on the trip also filled up at the same place and none of them had the same problem. Any ideas?? |

Rotten egg gas is just a by product of combustion - was your car colder than the others as it tends to diedown as the engine comes up to temp |

Hi Biam The car was warm when we filled up, and after a 4 hr trip back home was still stinking...you could smell it from a couple of metres away and was rotten inside the car. Hi Morris Interesting thing is that filled up with Caltex before we left yesterday and no smell whatsoever until filled up again today |

It is just the shell fuel, they use sulphur in there fuels and the smell will go away when you go back to another brand, it effects some cars more than others |

Something else to check for: After a short trip feel to see if your battery is hot. My alternator was over charging and I got the rotten egg sulphur dioxide smell. basically it was the battery acid boiling! 
Very bad for you too! and because I have a van it was coming from just behind my seat.

Thanks James, you were spot on. Couldnt take the car for a drive cause it wouldnt start! Checked the battery and there's battery acid all over it and the cells are now dry. So just coincidence that it started to stink just after i fuelled up. So what caused that? |

Probably the voltage regulator is faulty. After you fit a new battery, measure V across it with motor running. Anything over about 14.4V you need a new V regulator (if it's got an alternator) or reg adjustment if it's a generator. |

Have you ever put Unleaded in the car before, its usually the Cat Converter that produced that rotten smell, does you car have a cat converter. and is your ar set up for unleaded....just a thought, sorry.... |
