You need to cut the rust holes big enough to find good sound metal. Then cut a patch to fit and weld it in. Welding doesn't take well to rust...

Pulled out my carpets ready for new retrim only to find small rust holes in front floor pans. Does anyone know of someone that can weld in South East suburbs of Melbourne. I hope that the holes can be welded without major surgery. |

How small? Pin pricks or poke fingers through? Pin pricks can be fixed with paint! You need to clean the floor with a wire brush, then treat with rust converter, then prime with a good quality primer and then give it a couple of coats of paint. If the paint does not fill the holes you can stick tape over the hole from the bottom and than paint, when dry you peel the tape off the bottom. Bigger holes will need welding but you still need to wire brush the floor and treat it with rust converter. |

Holes are not big enough for fingers but bigger than pin holes. I`m worried that if welding is required it might just keep blowing holes in the floor chasing good metal. |

Thanks drmini perhaps i should buy a welder and teach myself to weld,owning a mini it might be a good idea. I just won`t practise on the mini. |

I owned a Valiant, got sick of bogging the doors annually, so I bought a MIG welder; there are parallels with Minis.

Buy a good MIG welder and use shielding gas. You won't regret it. Then you can do some side jobs for other Mini owners. |

Ditto. MIG welders are very handy to have generally. You know the saying "When all you have is a hammer, the whole world looks like a nail"? Well, more or less everything can be welded: Kids' bikes, brackets, cheesecake and, surprisingly, air. Plus, if you're visiting a nuclear plant and someone runs through the building saying "There's been a containment breach! Can anyone weld?!?!" - you'll be the man of the moment. Seriously, easy enough to learn and very satisfying. |

| Post subject: | Rusty floor Help.....Update. |
Well work on floor has stopped for a couple of months. I went to work Tuesday morning and was going to call a mini parts supply shop to get my new floor pans but before that happened i crushed the fingers on my right hand in a machine accident. Spent yesterday in surgery back at home today but have been told by the Doctor that i will be out of action for 3 months not happy  . Could have been worse at least it was only fingers.

Thanks bamnfi yeah typing with left hand not good and no there was no machine guard it was a 4in1 bucket on a front end loader. They still have one of my finger nails in my glove at work but i`ve told them that i won`t be needing it. |
