Post subject:  RUNNING LEAN HOT OR NOT

To all the learned Mini folk
I have just fitted a refurbed HS4 Single SU to my clubbie 1098 and it is running well. but today in Canberra the temp was 32 deg c and at 100kmh on a good stretch the temp climbed slowly to 220 deg far or 104 deg cel.

my question is if its leaning out will it cause it over heat (thats what I think )or is the above temps normal operating range considering the ambient temp and im just being paraniod :?

if it is leaning out I need to richen the mix (turning clockwise ) Right ?
and would it be best to fit a supplimental radiator(old heater core) behind the grill?

Any Suggestions please

Enjoy your weekend

Cheers

Hard to say it really is the mixture...but a lean mixture will cause overheating....did the radiator bubble over when you stopped or show other signs that the cooling system was stressed....

did it tend to run hot before with the twins??

Afternoon Mick
no the radiator didnt appear to bubble over or show signs of stress when i coasted for a bit down hill the temp dropped then came up again under power.
the temp was fine with the twins and i did not change anything when i changed the carbie at least i can get it to idle below 1000 rev now. :)

im picking up a 71 clubbie shell tomorrrow so the collection grows. :D

all going well ill see you tuesday at the Carilion perhaps

coolant boils at around 120*C (correct me if i'm wrong plz) and it's a fairly soild block. so i wouldn't worry about it. check your temp gauge to. http://www.hotbricks.org.au/ thats a good link with intructions. my only recomendation would be to use cooling when boil instead of water because u can hold it a 100*C with out it boiling. fast way to check is when the car is cold take the rad cap of and start it up and hold a thermometer in the rad and till it stops rising and just see what temp it really running at. because my car sit in the red all day but it is realy only at about 85*C

feel free to correct me if i'm wrong with anything. i like to leard so any advice is good.

Hmmm based on what you have said.... then...richen up the mixture....hmmm...if I had known today I would have put you in touch with CPOCSM in R8....he has a colortune plug.....

Just richen it up an watch what happens ...maybe call into Melba Motors sat morn...Mick might be able to give it a quick tweak...(tell him you are from the Mini Club)

Post subject:  Cooling Problem

Gday Gadget - well I can vouch for the heater core on the grille - I never had an issue with the heating up but was paranoid none the less. The way I nstalled it was I plumbed from the bottom hose, into the existing heater core, back out into the engine bay, into the second heater core mounted in the front grille near the fresh air intake snout, then into the cylinder head. I got to about a third of the way up the scale today but I was fanging it. The temp on the monaro just managed to get above the cold mark so I am confident the second core will help.

I have the gunsons colourtune here if you want to check the cars mixture but also check the carb too. Is the needle correct (ADF or AX?) but I am sure between the noggins here we can sort out your woes

Hooroo for now...

before you richen it up check you dont have a leak at the manifold head junction. You can avoid this using Maniseal "available at all your good auto outlets". If you have a slight leak it will cause you to run lean and you can get overheating problems. Alternatively just a side thought, are you running a thermostat. Not running a thermo can speed up flow of the coolant and actually cause overheating under load. It may even be worth replacing yours if it is a little old.

Gadge...you could also put some drops of oil along the manifold gasket line to see if it gets blown/sucked.....whatever...don't go overboard with the oil though!!

You can run withouit a thermostat so long as you leave a restrictor plate to slow the coolant down so that it stays long enough in the radiator to get ...well.....cooled!

What sort of container does Maniseal come in low'n blown? a tube?

I would look at everything just to make sure that it's running well.
I.E. Plugs, points, leads, dizzy cap, rotor button, ignition timing, vacuum advance working. Had the radiator checked recently?

By just tweaking the fuel mixture you can mask the real problem and end up with a petrol guzzler

I was running the same carby on my 1275 Moke and had exactly the same temp problem, convinced it was a lean problem threw away the carb and put twin SU's on and instant drop from 220 on a hot day to 190.
