yea, same for all my cars that I have had done...but maybe there were different ways, back when tint went purple and bubbled after next to no time....

Hi all How can i remove part of the tint, the glue bit, i guess owner before tried it, but didnt do a proper job, now im stuck with it. Should i just get a clear glass and replace it or take it to a tinting shop, which is cheaper and easier. Thanks Chris |

use a spongue with soapy water and reapply the soapy water about 5 times. It is a water based glue and should be easier to remove with a couple of old rags. G |

acetone and a razor blade or paint scraper. I had to do it to some purple bubble tint ages ago..... |

Window tinting is applied with soapy water as the glue reacts with the soap... that's why they tell you never to wash the side of the window that the tinting has been applied to with soapy water. I don't see any reason why warm soapy water wouldn't remove it. |

for how long have they used that method? There was NO WAY soapy water was going to remove the crud left on my windows..... This was over 10 years ago.... |

Every car I've had tinting done to, 2 in total, I've been told not to wash windows with soapy water. When we had tinting applied to the windows at work (about 5 years ago) I stood around watching the guy do it. He had a spray bottle that he was squirting on the tinting so I asked him what was in it... he said it was just soapy water. |

Yeah, same as Makka, my last effort required soaking a rag in Prepsol, or industrial grade thinners. Prepsol took a fair bit longer though. Thats AFTER you've ripped all the film off, of course.

There's no reason why you can't wash your windows with soapy water once the tint has been applied. It does not dissolve the glue and will not help you to remove it. Soap is used for the application (can use just water but not as effective) because it neutralises the glue, allowing you to 'float' the tint around on the glass into position and then squeegee the water out from behind. This means no air bubbles left trapped and once the water is pushed out, the glue becomes 'sticky' again and sticks - put stripes on my Cooper yesterday and was driving it within the hour. Any residual water left will slowly osmosise out over a period of time and the glue will achieve full adhesion. Once stuck, water cannot affect the glue as it has 'gone off'. I used to apply vinyls to the sides of yachts this way - while they were in the water! Even did a giant catamaran that raced around the world. Stickers still there at the end! To remove, use a glass scraper with a hair dryer to warm / soften glue then pull it off - it will not come off in one sheet. There will be remnants of glue left on the glass. I used to use turps to remove this if, I had no 'glue remover' left, and a lot of elbow grease. Acetone is also a good (better) solvent but be very careful as it may dissolve the paintwork if it gets onto the paint! |

Yeah, thats what I was thinking..... they just tell you not to wet it during the curing period. That is when you can stuff up the tint and get nasty bubbles. |

you scrape the film off with the flat edge of a stanley knife blade. Just make sure you get the full length of the blade under the film and slide along. As long as you dont dig the edges into the glass it wont scratch it at all. After the film is off apply turps generously with a rag and the gummy stuff will come off. |
