finally got mini just doing a service its got straight cut gears in the box what oil should i use?

As recommended by 'Dr Mini in Aust' and others, I use K-Mart brand motorpro KMX 20W-50. Under $20- for 6 litres and I change oil and filter every 2000 miles. I also use a rare earth magnet on the filter to catch metal fragments before they reach the oil plug magnet. That is up to you though.

I use the 25dia x 10 ones, sit it on the side of the spin-on filter down the bottom where the finger grips are.
It'll stay there..
I fit 2. :wink:

I've always used a couple of old hard drive magnets.. got an old hard drive? pull it apart and there's likely to be something suitable in there...

I suggest you just put one on and run it, then cut the can up after you have run it 3000 miles. Check out all the fine junk in there. :shock: :P
Anything under about 50 or 60 microns size doesn't get caught by the filter. It just goes, round, and round, and round...
Sure, the magnet only gets the steel and iron (ie magnetic), but they are the hard bits that do most damage.

ps. I now get bugger all on the sump plug magnet.. as it gets caught by the filter magnet first.:mrgreen:

Thanks Doc, will do. With all the $'s spent on the moneypit, any nasties I can keep out is good for me.

Just an aside, formerly being an organ donor, i.e. I rode motorbikes and lost some, why ain't premium bike oils good for these engines ? Seems an engine and g'box sharing the same oil would be appropriate. What am I missing here? bam.

They are, they're just bloody expensive.. especially when a Mini takes double? that of a bike..

Didn't mean to hijack the oil thread with the magnets but here is the link to the magnet discussion. I got the big one the doc recommended. $34- delivered in the mail. It will never fall off.

Thanks for the info guys...
Finally got home with the Mini. Its a long drive from Newcastle to Gladstone, especially when the car does 4350rpm@100kms (Navman GPS)so i spent most of the time doing 90kms, didnt matter so much in NSW as 1/2 the way was road works.
I will post pics in the owners gallery when i get a chance.

4350rpm doesnt seem too high, Cherry does over 4000rpm at that speed but then again I dont know what kind of mini you bought! Mine is a 998 and loves the revs :P
