MY faithful mini K cant get it up anymore.. (oil pres. that is) and so after cancelling out many other less expensive methods of rectification it seems that rebuild of engine (and gbox while we're at it) is the only option...3 things... Im getting link to do it, they quoted 4500-5000 depending on spec, balancing and the rest. Is that sounding about right and should i get it balanced/uprated cam? (standard 10y 1100) The full unit is 30046 mls old as of today, a new short motor was replaced underwarranty at about 12100mls due to a factory piston ring fault, so its really not that old.. is this normal? would its usage pattern (26000 mls over 35 yrs + 4000 mls in 6 months) kill it? how much mileage would i expect from a complete reco like this. 50000? 80000? Cheers.. my wallet is hurting already.. |

yea gearbox rebuilds can be pricey.....people forget that.... Bummer about the motor dude. Sometimes when they aren't driven much at all it can be worse that being driven all the time. I have heard a few horror stories about really low mileage cars..... |

$4.5-5K for any 1100 rebuild seems ridiculous to me. Unless parts are gold plated. ![]() |

but Kev...thats with reco box as well....is it not? If it is, then a place like Link would charge that much. That's no different to the Brookevale Bandits pricing...and people pay them! ![]() I am certainly NOT justifying their price at all...it's freakin HUGE!!...but I think it is to be expected from a place like that. |

Bummer about the motor dude. Sometimes when they aren't driven much at all it can be worse that being driven all the time. I have heard a few horror stories about really low mileage cars..... I was once told by a car dealer that low mileage Grandma cars are bad, because the 'pistons don't go up as high when the car is driven gently' and that as soon as a young hoon gets in them he revs it more than it has been revved before, so the pistons go higher than usual and the engine breaks. And no, I'm not joking, that's what he said ![]() Oh, and why are you getting a gearbox rebuild at the same time? I would have thought that on a low mileage car like yours the gearbox would still be serviceable, especially if you are only running a stock motor. If I spent $5k on a rebuilt motor, I'd expect a very fast 1275 for my money. Anto. |

yer better of getting the box looked at while you have the motor out cos it is a crap to do it all at a later date makka |

I think the guy at the dealer has a very limited knowldge of mechanics. The piston has to travel the same distance on each stroke, it's connected to the crank and unless the crank is flexing (which it shouldn't be) the piston travel will be indenticle from a slow low rev drive to a fast high rev drive. Having said that, he may have meant the rockers, they travel up and down by the connection to the cam shaft. If you were to drive a car around at a reasonable even happy go lucky pace it will travel a certain distance, pretty much thruout the rev range. If how ever you get in a car and red line it all the time, you will get whats Known and VALVEBOUNCE, thats bad! Don't do it. Then yes the rockers will go further than they should and will eventually break. Cheers Aaron PS, i rebuild my gearbox and it cost me $150. 1 good one from 2 average ones. |
