Hi all,
I've got a morris 1100 and a mini van which both have exhaust leaks where the exhaust manafold attaches to the exhaust pipe, is there meant to be a gasket in there? doing up the clamp as tight as i can doesnt do much to help..

any suggestions?

There's no gasket between the flange on the pipe and the manifold , the flange often is a bit out of shape but more likely is there could be carbon build up on the clamp stopping it from getting a good enough seal on it . Is the clamp a cast iron one or pressed steel ? Cast iron are the best and it should be cleaned with a wire brush (wear safety goggles) or wire wheel to make sure it hasn't got any carbon .

Also check that flare on the end of the exhaust pipe where it fits over the end of the manifold isn't cracked or chipped. This quite often happens if the engine steady bushes are allowed to deteriorate.

I always use an exhaust manifold sealant on all joints in the exhaust system -- I think 'Maniseal' is the one I've got at the moment. It's a paste somewhere in consistency between toothpaste and clay, which when heated by the hot exhaust expands and sets rock hard.

Spread a decent amount around both mating surfaces, then join and clamp them together.

ill pull the mini apart and have a look, theyre both cast iron though.

the 1100 doesnt have steady bushes.. stupid design, the engine moves around quite alot even though it has new mounts.. jumps out of second and all.

Rod change or remote change gearbox? this will have an impact on how much your engine moves about and how the manifold bolts to the gearbox. Remotes are more stable bottom end. The manifold is cracked most likely due to engine vibration and movement as the exhaust is effectively the engine steady.

1100's should come with steady bar on left side of the engine bolted to the firewall. You can fit a special steady bar from gearbox to subframe.
