Post subject:  is 20W50 oil ok for an SPI automatic?

hi all
I am about to do an oil and oil filter change and have completely forgotten which oil to use.
I have read the thread about 20W50 but am not sure if this is ok for a 97 Rover Spi Automatic.

any help would be great.

thanks all

Deb

I think (wait for another reply) that a 10w40 is a bit better for autos.
Don't use synthetic stuff.

They suggested 10W/40 for autos in UK. Here that said you could use 20W/50.
Autos get pretty hot in Oz. We've had 3 autos over the years (998, 1098, 1275) and always used 20W/50.
Try and get oil with SF or SG rating, not newer stuff.
You do NOT want oils with anti-wear additives.

KMX 20W/50 (KMart), Valvoline SG 20W/50, Castrol GTX, etc
Just read the bottle, don't buy anything with higher API rating than SH if possible.
