I have a Peter Manton look-a-like twin manifold . There is no vacuum take off for the brake booster - does in matter where I drill the hole to fit one? - Just dead centre?

Other question - I was giving it a clean up with the wire wheel when I hit the thick well stuck gaskets - white fibres started flying everywhere Stopped immediately - any ideas on how to get them unstuck? don't what to have too much of the stuff floating around

theres a gasket cleaner 3m make i use at work for getting old gaskets off spray that on and i f you wire wheel it it will be wet so no particles floating about.

Dont start drilling holes if it is a genune 'sports 850" Peter Manton manifold! if its just a copy than it really shouldnt matter where the hole go's, in the middle should be ok or over to one side.

I keep a number of old skool razor blades around the house for use in my razor plane. You can use the blade on it's own and they're very cheap from hardware shops. The back edge is blunt, so not as dangerous as box cutters if you need to use the blade alone.

Other than that I use a blade on tricky gaskets like this. If you get it right, the blade gets into the sticky stuff between the gasket and the metal and it falls right off. Not super fun, and gotta be careful, but works a treat.

I've got a 2" paint scraper that I sharpen up.... perfect for scraping gaskets & dried up gasket goo

I use a gasket dissolver to loosen them up and then a sharp paint scraper and they usually just peel right off and leave you with a nice clean gasket face.

Some gaskets will soften when soaked in water for a while.

I use an old blunt wood chisel about 2cm wide. Makes a great scraper.

I use a 3/8"SQ x 4" HSS toolbit, held flat but twisted at a slight angle. It cleans stuff off level without gouging the alloy.

Back to the original question.. if it's an original Manton twin manifold, you don't drill it lest The Boys pay you a visit

Otherwise, I don't see why you shouldn't take the booster vacuum from the centre of the balance pipe.

You could probably tap the RH end of the balance pipe, it will work the same but look less obtrusive.
(These manifolds don't have welch plugs in the end like BMC ones)

Looks like a Manton - same ribs and flat bit in the middle - but no 'Peter Manton' on the flat bit. Looks like whoever made them for PM ran a few on the side

Got the gaskets off - bit of soaking in water and a Stanley
