Post subject:  boiling fuelbowl
Dads mini has been having a couple of poblems today..

We were having a look at the su and noticed that the fuel in the [edit, not dashpot] fuel bowl was boiling..(this was after it was given a fang around the streets)
It is a standard 1 1/4 su on 1litre motor

What causes it to boil?

Heat, probably from the exhaust.
Perhaps the car is running lean?

You don't have fuel in the dashpot.

Your carburetor would need to be hundreds of degrees C to boil oil. It would flay the skin off your fingers when you removed the damper to check the level. What's in the dashpot?

oh ok ummm.....

Well it looked like boiling.. it was very hot and there were a couple of bubble looking things. (hence why i said boiling)

Now i think about it it was able to stick finger into so oops :oops: :oops:

I think we fixed the problem anyway because we swapped [edit not dashpot] fuelbowl covers over and found out my other brother didnt hook up one of the leads :oops:

ahh man im not having a good day.
i mean Fuel Bowl NOT dashpot...
its one of those days

well yeah what causes the petrol in the fuel bowl to be hot (dad said still not right)

sorry for another confusing post :lol:

Radiant heat from the exhaust can heat up the fuel bowl and hence heat up the fuel. Usually on a hot day after sitting for a spell with a hot motor. The bowl is normally cooled by air flowing over it as you move, but if you are stopped it will heat up.

A heat shield fitted between the manifold and the carb is enough to stop this by reflecting heat away. Your twin SUs will have one although and they are available (or easily made) for a single SU, though it's not often a problem.

oh ok....

dad says is it possible for it to get that hot that it will evaporate inside the jet pipe at the bottom of the fuel bowl??

It can cause problems, but usually only hesitation. Once you get moving it will clear itself. There's a ton of other things that can cause this as well.
