Hey all,

Please excuse me if this is a dumb question, but i have an engine stand with 4 attachment points and i was wondering what i should place them to. I have taken off the flywheel and clutch etc but left on that housing, do i need to take that off as well?

Do a search on engine stands, there was a post with pics just recently.

The best way is to make an adapter which bolts to the front of the block in at least two places (preferably more). This leave the flywheel end free.

i tried a search with "engine stand" and got 600 something pages! Had to remove the fly wheel anyway need to change the clutch over.

Most engine stands you buy have a large round tube that a pin gos through so you can turn the engine on different angles, and all the engine mounting points are attached to the end of the tube. i cut all that off and welded a 3/8 flat plate on with 2 holes in it that i can bolt to the alternator mounting points on the block with 2 5/16 UNF bolts. all the engine stands we had at NMP were like this and they supported the weight of a complete engine easily. Here's mine- I bolted it onto the oil filter boss as well.
Those 2 generator mount bosses are cast iron and a bit fragile, I've seen them break. You have 150kg swinging there when assembled.

Iv been bolting them on the generator boss for 20 years and never seen one break, you would have do be doing somthing brutal for that to happen i would reckon.

I haven't done it yet but I would use as many points as possible like Doc's one. I'd hate for a completely rebuilt engine worth anywhere from 1k to 10k snap the mounting points and fall a meter or so to the ground .

Im trying to adapt mine so it utilises the 2 studs for the oil filter holder and one of the holes for the alternator mount higher up on the block. ill let everyone no how it goes...unless someone wants to lend me there pre-fabricated engine stand holder
i hope i wont be telling everyone my engine dropped!!!!

I use a milk crate.

im using a bench (upper class milk crate)

A milk crate is a better engine stand than a bench.

You can sit a motor upsidedown on a milk crate with the head studs still in place. You can't do that on a bench.
(and you just thought I was being cheap!)
