Post subject:  wood and pickett dash

hello,

just tossing up ideas for my clubby build and wanting something different for my dash, but not just flat vinyl covered timber. im wanting something more shaped and styled.. like the wood and pickett dash. (see below)

my question is what do you think would be the best way to replicate it and how should i go about supporting it?
i pretty much only need to know how to make the curved cluster sorround thing

should i make a solid fibreglass one? or weld a piece of metal to the existing metal dash support so i can base the fibreglass from there? or make it out of wood then fix up imperfections with fibreglass? or (insert your idea here) :D my main concern is getting the curve right.

and ill be covering it with vinyl in the end too.

any ideas are greatly appreciated

I was thinking about doing one similar to this too. I was going to do a mock up in timber then decide from there the final build mode.

We can compare when finished :D

sorry but i think they`re YUK!!!,,, it`s just my opinion & i hope i havn`t stomped on anyones toes by saying that,,, but the mini isn`t a rolls royce or a Jag or a merc or an aston martin & it just doesn`t suit the minis guiseat all,,, basically it`s out of place & just doesn`t suit the character of our humble bare bones mini ,,, Just way tooo overdone in my books

Just My 2cents worth anyways

I'm more a fan of the Radford variant:

But I always feel a bit tucked inside a Mini with one of those wooden full-face dashboards (like the late Rover Cooper etc.). IMO it reduces the 'felt' space in a Mini dramaticaly. Might be only my impression - many people like them :)

But definately something different :)

Cheers,
Jan

fair enough. each to their own :D

as i dont have access to my clubby at the moment... is the metal top dash panel flat or curved? im assuming curved but if its flat it may make it easier.

i would be making it out of wood, then fibreglassing over that way you can also make it a bit personal, and add the little things you want to it!

is that what you did for your dash. is the top of yours curved?

yeah the dash rail is curved.
im thinking of doing a innocenti type copy, something like this but with the steering wheel on the right side of the car, clubby heater controls (naturally), and 4 guages on the left and a clock on the right of the 3main gauges. just a quick thing i did in paint.

my top rail wont be vinyled, itll be painted and ill somehow attach the fibreglass dash from behind so it is removable
