Post subject: | Help with Identification and VIN |
Hi all, I've recently bought an unregistered mini and need a little help identifying it. So far I've worked out that was originally a Morris 850, but I'd like to know the year. Its got sliding windows, and the push down starter switch next to the gearstick if that helps. The ID plate in the engine reads: TYPE: YMA2S1 CAR NO. 168472 Engine No. 8AM/U/H Right now I'm trying to get it registered in NSW, and I'm not sure what the VIN is. I realise there's no VIN standard in older cars, but what does the RTA want on the registration application? Is there another number I need stamped into the engine bay somewhere? Any help would be appreciated! |

The vin does not apply to most mini's as the system came in somewhere in the 1980's . All you'll need for the mini is the body number which they'll probably call the chasssis number . If you PM me the numbers from the ID plate I can give you an age to go with it from the 850 register . EDIT> details of the 850 register are here > http://www.ausmini.com/forums/viewtopic ... &start=315 |

My car is registered in South Australia and all that is recorded is the last six digits of the engine number. The VIN is filled out as "Not Recorded" on the rego forms. |

SA is a bit lax compared to NSW , you will need to record a chassis number of some form and body number is sufficient for that . |

I don't know what the body number is at the moment I've looked all over and can't find any numbers stamped into the body. Could someone tell me where to look? |

directly under the id plate, on the firewall... should be the same as 'car number' thats on the plate anyway, and the engine no. should be stamped there too.... also look on radiator shroud.... Took me ages to find my numbers on the firewall lol - I was staring right at them! also, remember, if the car has been repainted they may be very hard to see ![]() |

Don't you mean NSW is too strict? QCARD try looking on the firewall behind where the brake and clutch cylinders are. Should be about 5 or six digits. Edit - Beaten by Trix and agree should be six digits - the same digits as on the plate |

Thanks for the help! I found the body number underneath the ID plate. Its 5 numbers, and I've now shifted the plate up a bit so it can be read. |
