Is there a gasket under the top flange between the flange and the block?

Memory stretch... there is a rubber O ring I think that sits on the spine of the dissy but I could be wrong

There is an o-ring, but it is further down the shaft.
It negates the need for a gasket on your distributor.

There is the housing the goes into the block and the distributor shaft goes down the middle of - There is an O ring on the shaft that should stop oil coming up the shaft but what about between the housing and the block? The previous owner smothered this area in gasket goo obviously to stop oil leaking but there doesn't seem to be any gasket

No gasket required. You do see that oil works it's way up the shaft, but it doesn't cause any leaks.

Wow that looks pristine, how do you get things looking that clean and unworn?
Or is it a new part :?

No not a new part, just the attention to detail I put into building my engines.

Thats what I mean - mine doesn't have any grooves in the body part but there is a grove at the top - Thanks now I'll look for an O ring to fit

It is an early one - does the O ring sit in the middle rather than the top?

The "O" ring goes in the "O" ring groove in the center of the machined section!
Not at the top......

Just double checked - definately no groove - pulled another out of another bare block I have here and guess what? - groove with O ring 8) It's now in the cleaning bath and I'll use that for the rebuild.
