Its really a personal choice but i have always been a massive fan of the straight exhaust pip, i have change both exhausts on my minis so they come straight out the centre
Love to have a more scientific reason....but they are just nicer

I love the look for the centre exit but I've heard they tend to suck more fumes into the car, my only experience with one is on my son's car - satan's roller skate - it certainly stinks inside with no sign of an exhaust leak to account for the fumes |

I think that has more to do with the length of the pipe, not its absolute position. My car had a stubby outlet which ended underneath the rear beaver panel without protruding beyond the bumper line, and the aerodynamics would suck the exhaust fumes in through the boot and into the cabin. Now, the pipe is longer and the tip extends beyond the bumper line and it's much better.. |

I've found in the past that centre exits get cleaned up more on speed humps etc because they invariably hang lower. Also their fumes tend to hang around the back of the car, can get sucked into boot space (ie the car, there is no seal between) or into the rear side windows when open. And, if you car is hydro (like all good non-cheapskate Minis are)  how you hang the rear muffler bracket will determine if you can connect a hydro pump easily to pump it up.
I like my 2" side exit non-confronting zorst. It draws less attention from Mr Plod.

haha well mines abit of both sorta?my muffler kinks to the left but then comes straight out the back hahaha,dont get any fumes in the cabin but a hell of alot of soot on me barn doors! |

I've never owned a straight through exhaust (except for a tiny 998 cat's bum exhaust someone decided would look sportier installed straight, so that didn't count ). I've always liked side mounted cos everyone else had them center on their modified minis. Doc also makes a good point about access to hydro valves.
But... Middle mounted would make it easier to work on the rear radius arms and fuel pump (when installed back there), and there was always something wrong about a muffler situated less than 2 inches from a SU fuel pump and lines... Are they raspier in note for sticking straight out, or is that an old wives tale? |

I have a center exit 2" exhaust. The speedbumps are not a problem, but make sure your boot and cabin is sealed well. |

Wifes daily drive has a 2" Centre Exit and it never been been hit by the speed humps at the local shopping centre. Th front on the other hand is a differant matter. Since the Suspention has been pumped up and the U bold been cut back I have given it a good go over the last couple of days and neather the front or back have hit. If you Fit the Muffler as close to the Subframe (between the wheels) it want hit and have it as high as you can. I & the wife have never complain about any fumes entering into the cabin but I can admite the tipe is way past the bumper. Does sound a lot better then it did when the exhaust was hanging out the wrong side

1 7/8 left exit on the hottie in the clubbie so that it clears the tow bar. 2 in left exit under the pass door on a mates racer 1 7/8 left exit in the Fang twin 2 in exit on the 1800 ute. one each side 2 in right exit hot dog on the ride on mower |

I've had all and still have all , sports850 is center , van is side , moke is side and fang is pipe off the end of extractors in the center . I like the look of center so long as the muffler doesn't hang low or the tail pipe doesn't point upwards . Previous mini's have mostly been side exuit as I've had tow bars on them . Would like a pipe out eother side though .... |
