Post subject:  Battery Cable - Replacement

Hi Guy,

The battery cable from front to rear (12V) wore through in a big way. Just wondering what sort of cable to use to replace it?

Welding cable of the same diameter will be of higher quality & will carry the current without a worry.

Make sure you fit new grommets where it passes through the body (see the Adventures of BIAM for what happens if you don't)

Yep, and welding cable is flexible and has better insulation. It's much nicer to work with and your starter motor will probably spin a little better on cold mornings.

Thanks guys,

I ended up just going to repco and getting some cable. I went with a slightly larger diameter. It cranks so much better.

I did have a BIAM moment, hence having to replace it. It had rubbed through on the subframe. It was obviously worn through for quite some time, however yesterday whilst driving, I noticed that it was leaking smoke, so I pulled over and sure enough i couldn't see anything. But the car would not start again.

So I got it towed (thanks NRMA), and put it up on stands when I got home. I couldn't see anything on the cable, so decided to pull it out, and sure enough it had rubbed through quite badly.
