When we stripped the motor today I found it had a belt drive to the cam. Is this an advantage or not in a mini. In other cars I can see it would be but in a mini? |

Have you seen the price of a new belt? At $75 dollars you might not want it. Does any one know what the replacemant period for the belt is? |

I've had one for years. I changed the last belt after 40,000 miles and it looked new. I wouldn't run much past that though, it is a bloody short belt. OTOH, there's no idler on the back like all other cars, to flex and crack it. Karcraft's p/no is KC11, they sell it for $44.41 when they have stock, none last week.. 
They carry the 2 seals too. Belt ID is 052R190, my last one was a Dayco. If you find 'em cheap elsewhere let me know, I need one in a week or 2.

Doc, in my Karcraft cattledog they retail for 74.25. I wonder if CBC bearings can supply as they have a full dayco range. I will ring my mate the manager and let you know. |

can someone explain what the belt is - rubber, metal, silk... and how its attached to the crank and cam shafts? (and why theyre good vs chains) and sorry one more thing are they better than duplex chains? have i got it all wrong, are you not talking about timing chains... eek.

The belt drive is a new type of replacement for the timing chain. To fit it you need to replace the chain sprockets for belt drive pulleys. The kit is a small version of a Gilmer Drive. Yes, it has its advantages, but it also has its disadvantages. Just like a chain, the belt can stretch, but it doesnt have a tensioner to take up the slack. On the other hand, they ARE super quiet. There is nothing really bad about them. The timing belt in my mazda is exactly the same, it survived 115,000kms. At that point it was badly stretched (making it noisy from all the flapping around), a couple teeth were missing off the belt, and it was cracking. Replacing it with a new belt made the car run like new. Basically they are only meant to last 100,000 kays anyway. |

My cattledog is the latest, last month's. 
Often wondered whether CBC-BSC etc could supply these. Gates makes them too.

My comment on their advantage in a Mini was prompted because in a mini the chain is so short I wonder about any advantage it may have except for noise. On other pommy cars which have long chains I can see a big advantage to using a belt. Sorry but all offers declined but I will have an all synch close ratio box for sale as soon as I can get it and the motor apart. |

Early pattern belt- bottoms of teeth are flat.
Made by Dayco, in Italy. 
I think Gates or Pirelli belts use the same number. |
