I've done a search but can't find much detail. I was wondering whether there is a How To on removing an engine. (Whole engine & gearbox in one lot). Preferred removal via bonnet and not having to remove subframe. Maybe we can make one and put it in the how-to section?

remove carby

remove manifold/undo exhaust (if you've got a standard exhaust it's probably easier just to undo the flange)

undo earth strap

undo all mounting points. one near each wheel, one at the top near the radiator and one on the other side connected to the firewall

disconnect gearbox linkages

i think that's it. anyone?

 You dont have to worry about that 'till the gearbox is at the top of the guards/wings (whatever you want to call 'em) just a bit easier to get at there 8)

and dont forget all the wiring, starter solenoid, alternator, dizzy, coil, and if you have it the oil filter.

edit: dont forget about the driveshafts.

anyone got know if its possible to take the shaft out without undoing the hub etc. i got the passenger side out alright but the drivers side is harder to get out.
need to change the shafts because changing from uni to pot

i should have taken pictures and done a how to when i took out my motor this morning

disconnect battery

remove bonnet (Clubbies have a built-in scalp opener)

disconnect & tape up wiring: starter solenoid, alternator, coil, temp & oil sensors

undo earth strap

unbolt clutch slave cylinder

undo throttle & choke cables, undo fuel line and remove carby

remove manifold/undo exhaust (if you've got a standard exhaust it's probably easier just to undo the flange)

undo all mounting points. one near each wheel, one at the top near the radiator and one on the other side connected to the firewall

disconnect gearbox linkages

cut the tie wire / cable ties securing the pot joint boots

disconnect speedo cable from gearbox as it's being raised

That's about it. Pot joints should just lip apart, then you can hunt for the missing balls as they drop out!

Or just disconnect all your wiring, remove shift, undo your subframe bolts, lift up the front and roll it all out complete....if hydro do it the above way then you wont have to re pressurise

Umm , steering and brake lines as well with that version ....

I prefer to take the engine out the top as awdmoke described , easier and quicker than taking the subframe out , then taking the motor out of the subframe as well only to have to reconnect everything on the subframe back up again as well .

 Now you see why I didn't write it out myself , there's all the little things you do automatically but miss when you write it all out .

Mearcat , best idea would be to have a read through a workshop manual and look around the engine bay to familiarise yourself with everything . It is pretty straight forward and easy to do by yourself . Just make sure you have the car safely supported when you're undoing things underneath and use a good engine crane or endless chain that can support the engines weight .
