Hey all,

I have myself a side plate breather (I think they are called tappet cover breathers?) that can be bolted straight onto the right hand side plate of Lillee's 1100. My question is that the original tappet cover that is already here is either glued or welded on or something... either way it won't budge at all after I have taken the single bolt from the middle of the plate off.

Before I go ahead rip it off with all my might :lol: is there anything I got to be careful of? What's the best way? I was thinking a knife of some sort to scrape around the edges as I think it's rubber lined. Do i need to provide this sort of sealing when I put the new breather on as well? the new breather just has rubber around the edges of the plate and that's about it... any advice would be great.

I just don't want to stuff it up beyond repair that's all :roll:

Sounds like its just a stuck gasket on there. I'm pretty sure thats all was holding mine on (as well as the bolt) :D

Just use a bit of aviation gasket cement, but the rubberised gaskets (not the cork ones) really need nothing. :wink:

Make sure you put the rubber gaskets on the correct sort of side plate covers. Should work on the breather type, most of the ones I've seen had the lip around the gasket. I put the rubber ones on my covers (different sort to the breather type, no lip), and the oil poured out! I don't know exactly what the difference is, but there are two sorts of cork gaskets, but only one sort of rubber :?

I ended up with cork back on there, with gasket sealant between the gasket and the cover, but not between the gasket and block. Makes for easier cleanup later. Still leaks though.... The only way I've ever managed to get the things sealed is when I do them out of the car, so I can have some room to see that the gasket surfaces are good.

Yeah the cork ones are for early motors (no lip) and the rubber ones for the S and later Clubbies etc (with lip). The rubber ones will slide out if used on early covers. :wink:

Interesting realyI'm use to the the cork tyle and when I riped the Mk2 (no i did not rip it apart) it had the rubber style gasket, so I was able to save it for next time...one is differnt to the other..I never noticed :roll: :wink:

Funny you guys never mentioned that it would be a ****** tight fit! :cry: I spent all night practically trying this way and that to get the bastard on and in the end gave up and the old one back cork gasket and all... :(
