Hi guys, am slowing getting my mini-matic (lil egg) on the road, and now everything has been done except the paint and the new windscreen. SO, the old bloke I bought it off had given it a quick coat of white housepaint over the original snow white duco. What should I use to get the (or is it possible) to get the housepaint off without taking off the standard duco?
And also what company can fit a new windscreen for me that won't charge me like a wounded bull?

Haven't got any paint removal tips, but I've found it quicker & cheaper to take a car to my local smash repairer to fit a windscreen than any of those mobile mobs. Just pay cash & they will do it while you wait, but on a mini you can do it yourself

brownclubman did a good resto on his a fair while back He used glad wrap over the top of paint stripper leave to sit for a while and it lifts right off. i cant remember where it is this all happend 2006 i thinky.

ohh sorry this takes it right back to bare metal.

If it is a oil based enamel house paint you cou;f try the trick for removing sign writing, get one of those aerosol cans of oven cleaner and spray it on and after a little while use water and a rag and wipe it off, it should just wash awayand leave the base paint alone

Thanks for the tip guys! I've primed, sanded and painted the two panels that had been replaced so no house paint on them, will try the ovencleaner trick! thanks again. will post my results

Be carefull with the oven cleaner. Try it on a non critical bit first.
I have seen it do nasty things to some paint and alloy depending on the brand.

You could try a thin application of paint stripper, if it's that thick then you'd need several coats to get it all off.. maybe you can get away with softening the house paint with one application... ?

dont use paint stripper because as soon as you go to wipe it off the top layer it will spill onto the bottom and take it off too, and old paint isnt usually too sticky. buy some wax and grease remover and try that, if that doesnt work try petrol, and if that doesnt work then maybe try some thinners but be careful not to soften the bottom layer too much or ittle come off.

The best way of getting it off is paint stripper. I know you said you want to remove it to keep the original duco but I would definitely paint strip then repaint. You'll get a better long lasting finish knowing that things are done properly.

Josh do you know how good the original paint is? If you soften the house paint with something could you use a plastic spatula or even a nylon scourer pad to gently remove the house paint?

Well ive been sanding the BEJESUS out of it and house paint is softening up. I just want to be able to dodgy paint it with spray cans (so at least its all white again) and then next year she'll go in for a full back to bare metal. It's just paining me to start it up once a week and drive it up and down the driveway and not being able to go any further. Engine electricals etc are all A1.
