Post subject:  Strengthening rear parcel shelf

OK Mo has two friggin holes in the parcel shelf where some git decided that they had to install speakers (NOT me...).

Is it possible to replace this panel without removing the rear glass..? I just replaced and resealed it.

Is there any other way of reinforcing it..? I want to install a harness and roll cage and want to do it all safely.

Speaker holes in the parcel shelf are a WoF failure in NZ*. You want to cut steel to fit and weld it on, preferably from underneath. Do a neat job, paint it and it should be pretty good. Cover the top with thin MDF covered in vinyl or whatever.

* Funnily enough, unless the holes are huge then they're okay if they have speakers in them. Which prompts me to think that they consider speakers to be crash protection. Or you can weld strengthening rings around the holes. It's a funny old world, making up the rules to cover what people do to their cars :)

Mine has 6" round speakers- I cut a long piece of 3.5mm steel plate 150mm wide, and butted it against the rear seat back. Couple of 8mm bolts hold it, apart from the 7/16" seat belt anchor bolt which goes thru it. Pretty strong- it would have to tear thru the rear seat to break free. 8)

Hey doc. Do you have a pic? Do you have a race harness, or just normal seatbelts?

Not sure what you mean by "butted"

Race harness, 3 point. No pics yet.

`Butted' I mean it is hard against the seat back.

OK last dumb question  . So this piece of metal is on the inside of your boot yes..?

And you would just drill the bolt holes through the back seat and through the strengthening bar?

How does the back point of the harness bolt on? Through the top of the parcel shelf?

OK OK OK!
I just installed the 4 point harness into mine last night after buying it from Nathan (SC850) on Saturday.
The two REAR harnessing points are coupled together and clip onto one "eye-ring" bolt, which also holds the strap of the original seatbelt.
This eye ring bolt is the same thread as the originial bolt for the old seatbelt, so it just goes straight in the old hole.
The left and right side mounts go into the factory floor mounts- i've made it so i can still use all my seat belts as well.

1. Yes
2. No- the bolts go thru the parcel shelf and the strengthening plate
3. Belt bolt goes thru the parcel shelf and plate, nut tightened up to 30Lb/ft approx.

use the speaker holes as holes for the cage to go into the boot and weld the cage to the floor. With a cross bar under the parcel tray you would have unparralled chassis rigidity in the rear end.
Use a short coming to become a strength 8)
I know it may seem a little hypocritical as my stereo is very noisy but who needs speakers in a mini anyhow... just means you cant hear it when something goes wrong till something goes really wrong
