Whether or not it's below the oil level, replacing it in the car is going to be a sod of a job, it's hard enough to just get the speedo cable off.. let alone the drive

Just wondering if this can be removed and replaced whilst the engine is in the engine bay and if removing it would cause all the engine oil to flow out. Cheers |

No oil will run out. Never done it but i think it would be possible from underneath. Very awkward though. |

if your not sure, drain the oil out first, I know nothing about this sort of thing, but that sounds reasonable to me. Sump plug out into container, change gear drive, tip oil back into top of engine, surprise, no mess on the floor... easy peasy....lll

i have done one in a car its not the easiest job, all you need to do is make sure the speedo cable is done up nice and tight when you finish

The speedo doesnt work, I have tested it by spinning the cable attached to the speedo and it spins the needle and I have had the front end up on stands, in first gear, engine running and speedo end of cable out and does not spin so I am assuming it can only be the drive gear inside. I am so not willing to remove the engine just for one part but willing to do it once to resolve the issue of the speedo not working. |

It`s probably just a broken cable,,, have you had the whole """INNER""" cable out & had a look at it yet??? The bottom end is supposed to be square shaped, altho the later replacement cables rend to look more squashed (diamond) shaped |

I would look at the inner cable first. It should just pull out from the top to inspect it. Then look at the driven gear. The gear can split or it can even wear the square hole into a round hole. This gear is held by a single bolt and can be undone with a 7/16th socket and a long extension bar. |

But if it is spining from gearbox end using a drill and the needle moves then that would tell me there is nothing wrong with the cable itself?? |

yeah i tried and failed.  . tried harder and failed even more.... spent more time on it then getting the radiator out,, ( and radiator was out when trying to get drive out) Then some one smashed into my car so while the front end was getting a chop and swap, mini man got it out for me.... i hear it was a stubborn one  .
i think i still owe him one for that .

Are all speedo gears the same, I pulled the one out from my 1275 and I have a spare that looks to be in good nick from a 998. |

I think that during the whole Australian production life they used the the one speedo gear and used different speedos to take account of the different diff and tyre sizes. But later on the UK introduced different speedo gears. |
