Post subject:  Bringing a Mini back from London

My bro has been living in the UK for 4 - 5 years, and might be returning to OZ in the next year or so.

If he moves back here, he will be shipping his belongings as well. I said as a joke, "Let me buy a Mini and shove it in your container to bring back".....and surprisingly he said "no worries"

So.....what kind of stuff should I expect in doing this? Cost, taxes, legalities etc?

I basically want a late model (injected) Mini that is rusted to the max....all I want is the mechanicals.

It's one year, and the cost is like some percentage of the cars value plus container costs plus customs fees and all the rest. Just get him to bring in the engine and gearbox, if you're only going to throw the shell out anyway.

yeh, just get a frontcut and get him to put it in a container with the rest of his stuff, if he's bringing anything back in a container that is - if he owns a car for more than a year it's a personal import and I don't think is any duty payable on it....

you can check with customs, and I've used a freight forwarder called Specific Freight (in Nikki in Sydney office and Phil in Melbourne office) a few times for shipping cars internationally and they're good, they know most of the in's and out's and can point you in the right direction

I will draw up a wish list for when he is coming back. I have already bought some 'bits' and had him ship them over.... He didn't even want me to pay him back!

Phwoa!!!

Yeah I'd like him to bring back a pair of 7.5 discs! They go for next to nothing over there!

Ask some one that has just done an import and they should be able to give you the run down......

The rules for personal imports are much different than the rules for imports. Take a look at http://www.dotars.gov.au/transreg/vsb/vsb_10.htm and click the link for personal imports.
Your brother MUST own the car for twelve months before bringing it home. The web site gives the details.

My Austin Montego was a personal import. A woman in Melbourne bought it with her when she moved from England.
